Abstract

Academic freedom is a cornerstone of democracy and the right to education, yet in Brazil it has been strained by neoliberal and neoconservative policies that weaken university autonomy and teachers’ working conditions. Using an intersectional lens, the article analyzes how de-democratization operates in the educational field, unevenly affecting women, Black, Indigenous, and LGBTQIAPN+ people. In dialogue with the “teacher shortage,” it argues that the precarization and silencing of educators constitute structural attacks on the freedom to teach, learn, research, and disseminate knowledge. The article advocates for a regional agenda linking academic freedom, gender, intersectionality, and material democracy.
