Submissions
Author Guidelines
THE JOURNAL'S ARTICLES SECTION IS PERMANENTLY OPEN FOR SUBMISSIONS.
1. Receipt of texts
The journal accepts submissions on an open basis both for the thematic Dossier, through calls limited to each issue, and for the Articles and Debates sections, on a continuous and permanent basis.
2. Text types and length
Only works that strictly comply with the following guidelines will be accepted for evaluation:
- Texts submitted for the Articles and Dossier sections must be between 35,000 and 40,000 characters with spaces, including notes, bibliographic references, graphs and tables.
- Essays for the Debates section must be between 8,000 and 13,000 characters with spaces, including notes and bibliographic references.
3. General document format
Texts must be prepared in a Word file or similar (.doc, .rtf) and formatted uniformly on A4 paper, Times New Roman font or similar, size 12, with single spacing. Top and bottom margins of 3 cm; left and right margins of 2.5 cm. Footnotes must always be in Times New Roman or similar, size 10. The footnote marker must always come after the punctuation mark, if any.
Underlining and bold must not be used in the body of the text; if it is necessary to emphasize a word, italics may be used.
Lines or graphics of any kind must not be used to separate notes, paragraphs, quotations, etc.
Text titles: in all cases they must be left-aligned, without numbering or indentation, and must comply with the following rules:

4. Text structure and double-blind review
To ensure blind review, two files must be submitted:
4.1 File with authorship
The article will include the title and the name(s) of the author(s). It must be preceded by a cover sheet containing the following information:
- Title of the work
- Translated titles of the work
- Given name(s) and surname(s) of the author(s)
- Abstract in the original language and translated abstracts (between 100 and 110 words) + keywords in each language (up to 5)
- Email address of the author(s)
- Full institutional affiliation of the author(s)
- Country of the author(s)
- ORCID ID. Please add the full link, as it appears in this example: http://orcid.org/0000-0002-1825-0097
4.2 File without authorship for double-blind review
The article will include:
- Title of the work
- Translated titles of the work
- Abstract in the original language and translated abstracts (between 100 and 110 words) + keywords in each language (up to 5)
The authorship and affiliation data from the previous point (name of the author(s), email, institutional affiliation, country and ORCID) are omitted from this file.
Likewise, ALL marks of authorship, self-citation and institutional reference in the work must be replaced with the following phrase: “data removed for evaluation purposes”¹
4.3 Full text structure
The text must have the following structure:
- Title: in Spanish, Portuguese and English. In lower case (except for the initial letter or proper nouns) and without a final period. It may not exceed 120 characters with spaces.
- Given name(s) and surname(s) of the author(s) (except in the file without authorship for double-blind review).
- Abstracts: in Spanish, Portuguese and English (between 100 and 110 words) and five keywords (also in all three languages). For original research articles, the objective, theoretical-methodological perspective, results and conclusions must be included, duly summarized. For essays or state-of-the-art reviews, the abstract must include the main aspects addressed in the text.
- Email address, full institutional affiliation (only the university of affiliation and, where applicable, the national S&T agency will be indicated) and country of origin of the author(s).
- References: single spacing, Times New Roman or similar, size 12. According to APA 7th edition standards as adapted by CLACSO (see point 5, “Citation and bibliography system”). The title of this section will be “References,” and it will include only the sources cited in the body of the text.
5. Citation and bibliography system
The general style of the texts, citations, footnotes and bibliography must follow APA standards (7th edition), with two main modifications agreed upon by CLACSO for the final bibliography:
- Retain the mention of the city of publication of the text, in order to preserve the geopolitical origin of the edition.
- Retain the mention of the author's full first name, not just initials, in order to preserve the author's gender marker.
Example: Anderson, Benedict (2016). Comunidades imaginadas. Reflexiones sobre el origen y la difusión del nacionalismo. México: FCE.
The distinction made in APA 7th edition between short direct quotations (fewer than 40 words) and long quotations (more than 40 words) is retained, with the exception of double spacing for long quotations, so that the entire text must be presented with single spacing.
Please remember that:
- All sources cited in the text must appear in the reference list at the end of the document.
- For citations with page numbers, indicate “p. XX” for citations located on a single page and “pp. XX-XX” for citations spanning several pages. Not “pág.” or “págs.” E.g.: (Foucault, 2002, p. 20) or (Foucault, 2002, pp. 20-21).
- Neither bold nor italics will be used to highlight any type of quotation. The use of italics within quotations is permitted to highlight words or expressions inside the direct quotation, in which case it must always be indicated whether the emphasis is the author's own or original.
- Whenever part of the text is omitted in a direct quotation, three dots in brackets will be used: […]. Likewise, any clarification that is not part of the quoted text will be written in brackets.
- In the case of secondary citations, indicate “cited in” and provide an entry for the secondary source in the reference list. E.g.: (Marx, 1852, cited in Sánchez, 1991, p. 203).
- If an edition later than the original has been used but the original is referred to in the body of the text, or it is considered significant to include it, the original is listed first, followed by the one corresponding to the citation, as follows: (Foucault, [1969] 2009). It must appear in the same way in the final bibliography.
- If there are two or more works by the same author published in the same year, they will be distinguished by letter. Example: (Gómez, 1994a, p. 162). If the name appears in the paragraph: (1994a) or (1994b). In the bibliography, the order established by the letters must be followed.
When preparing the final bibliography list, please remember that:
- The reference list must begin immediately after the last paragraph of the text.
- The reference list must be arranged alphabetically by the authors' surnames. If there are several works by the same author, they must be arranged chronologically.
- If there are several works by the same author with the same publication date, they must be arranged by placing the letters a, b, c… next to the year. However, if the original edition is indicated in brackets, and this makes it possible to differentiate them, this is not necessary. For example, if there are two entries by Freud from 1980, the first should be labeled “a” and the second “b,” but if the references are ([1919] 1980) and ([1920] 1980), this is not necessary. In the body of the text, the parenthetical citation must match exactly what appears in the bibliography (that is, with the bracketed original edition).
Example:
Pérez, Juana (2010 [1989]). Libro ejemplo. Buenos Aires: Casa Editorial.
Pérez, Juana (2010a). Otro libro ejemplo. Madrid: Edición ABC.
Pérez, Juana (2010b). El tercer ejemplo. Buenos Aires: Ediciones ejemplo.
- Do not use the expression “available at” or “retrieved from” to indicate a source's web page. In cases where the source can be consulted online, place the URL directly at the end of the reference.
- Include the city of publication, never the country.
- Reference titles in Spanish and Portuguese are not capitalized (lower case, except for the first word and proper nouns or spelling requirements). For titles in English, the capitalization of the original source is respected (title case).
- Titles of journals and periodicals are capitalized in all relevant words, in any language.
- All source data that is not part of the title (month, city, prepositions such as “en” or “y”) is given in Spanish. Change “&” to “y” and “in” to “en.”
- If the resource was taken from the web, consider what type of publication it is and provide the details according to whether it is a book, a book chapter, a journal article, a newspaper article, a blog post, etc. At the end of the reference, add the retrieval URL. It is not necessary to indicate the consultation date each time a URL is included, except in the case of frequently updated web pages. Do not place a period at the end of the web address, as this may interfere with its function when copied and pasted into a browser.
- Book with more than one author: for texts with up to three authors, all given names and surnames must be listed. For texts with more than three authors, and if the publication does not have an editor or coordinator, the name of the first author should be given followed by the abbreviation “et al.” The abbreviation et al. must be written in roman type (not italics) and with a period after “al.”
Examples:
Three authors:
REFERENCE: Jarvis, Lovell; Montero, Cecilia e Hidalgo, Mauricio (1993). El empresario fruticultor: fortalezas y debilidades de un sector heterogéneo. Santiago de Chile: CIEPLAN.
CITATION: (Jarvis, Montero e Hidalgo, 1993).
More than three authors:
REFERENCE: Giarracca, Norma et al. (2000). Tucumanos y tucumanas. Zafra, trabajo, migraciones e identidad. Buenos Aires: La Colmena.
CITATION: (Giarraca et al., 2000).
- For articles in a non-scientific newspaper or magazine without an author, place the name of the publication as the heading of the reference. Do not repeat it after the title of the text.
E.g.: La Jornada (15 de marzo de 2002). Religión y educación. http://www.servicioskoinonia.org/agenda/archivo/obra.php?ncodigo=7695
- For references to YouTube videos, we will use the following model taken from APA 7th ed., with the addition of a clarifying bracket for any type of information not covered by the model:
Name of the author or channel [YouTube username] (date). Title of the video [Video]. YouTube. [Any additional information]. http://youtube.com/url-del-video
- For references to papers or participations in congresses, symposia, workshops, conferences, etc.:
Surname, Given name (date of the event). Title of the paper, lecture, speech [Here you may indicate the description of the presentation: paper, lecture, keynote address, etc.]. Name of the event. Organizing institution, city where it took place, country.
Example: Arizpe, Lourdes y Aranda, Josefina (20-23 de mayo de 1981).
If the work has been published in proceedings, cite it following the model for a book chapter.
- Interviews: if the interview is retrievable, then the format must be chosen. It may be an interview available as a YouTube video file, on a web page, in a scientific journal or in a newspaper. If it is not retrievable, it must be cited as a personal communication.
¹ It will be necessary to verify that the document's property identification has been removed. In Microsoft Office documents, the author's identity can be removed from the file's properties. Click on File in the main menu of the Microsoft application: File > Save As > Tools (or Options on a Mac) > Security > Remove personal information from file properties on save > Save.
